Have you ever woken up one day and felt like you were drowning once you looked at the workload in front of you? No matter how organized, efficient and productive we attempt to be, we all get a little behind schedule due to taking on more than we can chew, or due to just plain laziness. Whatever the case, the saying goes that the work isn’t going to do itself. In this case, what’s the best way to tackle the workload before it piles even higher? Here are a few hacks that may help.
1.Create a complete list of the pending work
List out the pending items and don’t add anything new to the list. When you don’t write things down, many of your tasks become lost in between thoughts of burgers and client demands, so it’s always better to have somewhere you can refer back to. When you’re writing the list, write it in order of priority and urgency so you have the most urgent at the top of the list.
- Do the shorter tasks first
If you have tasks that can be done within a few minutes, make it a priority to get them out of the way first. Make sure replying a quick email doesn’t turn into an hour long task, stick to the time limit you set yourself, no faffing around. Whatever you do, try and leave the longer and more arduous tasks for later on.
3.Create a tangible deadline
You’ve probably already created deadlines, yet have still found yourself in this backlog predicament. This time around if you want to get out of the hole you’ve found yourself in, you’re going to have to mean business. The danger in not keeping to your deadline, is that the longer you take, the more new work that gets added to the list. Clearing a whole day or two to catch up or doing overtime at night may be some good ways to tackle it once and for all.
3.Switch off almost everything
Sometimes your greatest enemy is in all of your gadgets. Turn off your phone and silence all notifications if you want to get on top of your backlog. You’re going to have to minimize all distractions until you’re almost at a point of hibernation to make the most of the time you have to get rid of your unpleasant pile of work.
The greatest advice we can give you for your backlog is like Nike has said time and time again ‘Just do it’.
